Older Driver Assessments Older drivers bring a wealth of experience, confidence and tolerance to their driving. Fading eyesight, hearing, reaction time, judgement of speed and distance and stiffening joints will cause a deterioration in driving skills, perhaps even before the driver notices it. Others are driving because they have lost a partner who did most or all of the driving, or have a partner no longer able to drive. Whilst its true that older drivers are less likely to have an accident, that is due to them making fewer and shorter journeys. The casualty rate for drivers over 65 does increase per mile travelled, and the fatality rate increases very significantly as an older body is less able to survive serious injuries. If you take an assessment early enough, faults can be corrected and driving raised to a safer, more satisfactory standard. Periodic, regular further assessments could extend your driving career when you might otherwise have to stop.
